Ancient Japanese legend says that 1000 paper cranes will bring the crane to grant your wish for health or long life. A little girl named Sadako Sasaski attempted to do this using paper from get well gifts, etc. during her stay in the hospital, and inspired a book based on her story, as well as a children's peace memorial. Over time, the paper crane has come to symbolize peace worldwide.
